After a long wait and much-anticipation, the first look of Alia Bhatt's character as 'Gangubai Kathiyawadi' was released on Wednesday. The makers of the film took to social media to share the same. Alia Bhatt on her instagram wrote, "Here she is, Gangubai Kathiawadi."
The team released two posters of the character, where one focuses on the young Gangubai and the other in a matured look with a big red bindi. The intriguing posters however do not reveal a lot about the character, and add to the anticipated role of the mafia queen.
Written and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Utkarshini Vashishta, Gangubai Kathiawadi is a biographical film, based on the life of the mafia queen who was also a a brothel owner and matriarch. The film is being written based on the chapter from Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.
Before beginning the shoot, Alia Bhatt had also shared her excitement of playing this character. She took to Instagram in December 2019 and shared a picture with a message that read, “Look what Santa gave me this year ????❤️”. Alia has always dreamt of working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali since he’s one of the best directors in the country and is super excited to be starring in a female-centric film."
Besides Alia Bhatt, the film stars Vijay Raaz in pivotal role. Co-produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada (Pen), Gangubai Kathiyawadi is expected release on September 11, 2020.
