Mumbai - The demonetisation of 500 and 1000 rupee currency notes took the country by surprise, and the buzzing metropolis was hit specially hard. Paucity of lower denomination notes meant people travelled lesser, shopped sparingly and did not eat out as much as they would have liked to.
Canny shopkeepers, on the other hand, have had a field day. Our reporters in the field observed several shopkeepers charging a commission of 100 rupees to hand over change of Rs 500, or giving out Rs 450 in change against a Rs 500 note. With one more day to go before the ATMs open up, and the long queues at the banks on Thursday, citizens are wondering - where exactly will the change come from?
