Over 10,000 bank employees, owing allegiance to the United Forum of Bank Unions, representing labour unions in nine banks across the country are observing a day long strike today.
Banking services will be hit as the employees protest against 'privatisation and anti employee policies of the banks'. Among the banks that are hit by the strike are State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda.
The UFBI federation comprises nine bank employee unions including the AIBEA, the AIBOC, the NCBE, the AIBOA and the NOBO, as well as representatives from private, global banks and cooperative banks across the country. An estimated 10000 bank employees are likely to participate in today's strike. These are planning to hold a protest march at Mumbai's Azad Maidan today.
According to the Federation's spokesperson Vishwas Utagi, cash transactions will not be conducted during the strike hours, and that only ICICI and HDFC banks will run normal operations today.
