Car accidents cause concussions, back injuries, concussions and broken bones. But one of the most common and often overlooked car accident injuries is facial trauma. Seat belt use is an effective way to save lives and reduce facial trauma during a motor vehicle accident. It should be mandatory for all passengers sitting in the front and rear of the car to wear seat belts.

The accidental death of former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry highlights the importance of wearing rear seat belts in cars. Nowadays, there has been an increase in the number of people suffering from minor to serious facial injuries in road accidents or emergency braking to save children and the elderly from potholes. A person on medications such as blood thinners may find it challenging to heal facial wounds. Facial injuries can change your appearance as well as your ability to speak, hear and breathe.

Dr. Debraj Shome, director of The Aesthetic Clinics, India, says that facial injuries caused by accidents can cause severe skin damage. These include facial fractures, swelling, oral fractures, broken jawbones, broken noses, peeling skin, lacerations, burns, broken teeth, skin cuts and bruises. Car, truck and bike accidents are the cause of facial injuries for the majority of people. Broken glass can pierce the skin, and steering wheels and airbags can fracture the face. Road accidents can disfigure one's face for life. The incidence of facial injuries has been observed to be increasing. One in ten patients visit the hospital for a minor facial injury, while a small percentage suffer more serious injuries to the bones or soft tissues of the face.

After consulting many patients in the clinic about the injury, we noticed that the driver has control over the speed, but sometimes the driver applies the emergency brake while trying to avoid a pothole in the road and this also leads to an accident. Someone in the back seat could be seriously injured. While some couples travel with their baby in the car, the child sits in the back seat, but in India there is no concept of car restraint seat even for babies. Dr. Shome also says that those with facial injuries may require facial reconstructive surgery.

Underlining the importance of accidental injury, Dr. Debraj Shome said, India is a country where drivers only use seat belts to avoid fines. Many people buy cars with only 2 airbags and think that having more airbags is an 'unnecessary expense'. Passengers in cabs face road accidents and lose their lives because most cabs do not have any functional seat belts. Having rear passengers wear seat belts is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones while on the road. In the event of an accident, the seat belt on the back seat will protect you from being ejected from the car and from serious injuries.

A special campaign is needed across the country to create awareness and guide people about the law and our NGO Debbrata Oro Foundation is working tirelessly on this front. When people die in such road accidents, it is certainly a great loss to the family and the nation. Dr Shome also said, for heaven's sake, please make sure you wear your seat belt while traveling in the back seat of your car.
