Mumbai: 18 People Died Crossing Railway Tracks Between July 10-12

Data obtained from Mumbai Police reveals that at least 18 people have lost their lives while crossing railway tracks between July 10 and July 12, 2021. 

A majority of the deaths occurred on the central line, officials said. While seven people died on July 10, eight and three people died on July 11 and 12.

The incidents were spread out between Kurla and Chunabhatti, Koparkhairane and Turbhe, near Byculla Station, Byculla and Sandhurst Road, Mulund and Thane, Mulund and Nahur, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli, Thakurli and Kalyan, Vitthalwadi Station, Asangaon, Prabhadevi and Lower Parel, Andheri, and Vileparle over a three day period. 

Shedding more light on the Asangaon incident, a police officer familiar with the matter said - “In the Asangaon station incident, the deceased were a mother and her two-year-old child who died on July 10 after being hit by the Tapovan Express.”

People continue to cross railway tracks despite constant appeals and warnings from the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police to not do so and utilize foot overbridges. Moroever, some people prefer to cross railway tracks even when a foot overbridge is available on the premises.
