The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing to open a new vehicle underpass by early May. The tunnel is 550 metres long and 11 metres wide. It is meant for vehicles coming from Dadar and Prabhadevi areas. The underpass will give direct access to the Mumbai Coastal Road.
This tunnel is the only subway in the 10.58-kilometre-long Mumbai Coastal Road project. As per reports, the subway was designed to handle future traffic needs. It connects to the Sewri-Worli elevated corridor. This link will help drivers reach either the southern or western parts of Mumbai faster.
The subway will connect J K Kapur Chowk to the coastal road. It will go under the Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan road. It will link to the vehicular interchange at Bindoo Madhav Thackeray Chowk at Worli Sea Face.
Currently, the following works are going on:
- Painting lane lines
- Putting up lights
- Paving the edges.
As per sources, these tasks will be completed in the next few weeks. This tunnel will complete the last missing part of the coastal road.
Once it is opened, vehicles coming from Dadar will no longer need to use the Worli or Haji Ali interchanges to reach the coastal road. This will reduce congestion at Worli. Once inside the subway, drivers can choose to go to Marine Drive or towards Bandra.
At present, the Mumbai Coastal Road is fully operational. It allows travel between Bandra Worli Sea Link and Nariman Point. Only southbound vehicles from Dadar and Prabhadevi will be allowed to use this new tunnel.
