The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently announced 100 per cent attendance for its employees. However, several employees that travel from faraway areas complained about the hassles they face while commuting. Following this, BMC chief Praveen Pardeshi had asked all the ward officers to convince star hotels and lodges in their jurisdiction to house all the civic employees involved in essential services.

In one such instance, Taj Group had offered unconditional assistance by providing its five-star hotels to house BMC staff involved in COVID-19 work. However, since the BMC had decided to reimburse the hotels for their assistance, they decided to pay Rs. 2,000 as charges per day per room shared by two persons. This included charges for food and laundry services. Usually, Taj Hotel located near Gateway of India charges Rs. 10,000-15,000 per day per room.

On Friday, Pardeshi had issued an order asking ward officers to talk to hotels and fix charges for employees' stay at such hotels as follows:

  • Rs. 2,000 per day for five-star hotels
  • Rs. 1,500 per day for four-star hotels
  • Rs. 1,000 per day for three-star hotels
  • Rs. 500 per day for non-star hotels

The move by BMC to impose 100 per cent attendance to bring all hands on deck in the fight against coronavirus. While BMC employees over 55 years of age and people with medical conditions have received some relaxations, they also have been asked to work. The civic body asked people in the medical department, including doctors, nursing staff and paramedics over the age of 55 years with co-morbidities to stay home for 2 weeks.

Meanwhile, with the public transport being shut as of now, the BMC asked all its staff living outside BMC limits, like Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mira Bhayander or Palghar etc., to contact the nearest Ward office of BMC.
