The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had recently announced that cable TV and DTH consumers will soon have the freedom to choose the channels. In response, the cable operators across the country have decided to protest against the regulation and as a result, the operators have decided to shut the cable services down for three hours on December 27. Due to which, the cable TV consumers won’t be able to access TV channels from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Thursday.

The cable operators have alleged that as per the new TRAI regulations, the future of cable operators as well DTH owners would be put under danger. Therefore, the operators have resorted to protest against the telecom authority whereas, on the other hand, the Cable Operator & Broadcaster Association had held a meeting on December 26 which consisted of several people from the vivid organisations. Upon discussion, the members at the meeting unanimously agreed to protest against TRAI.

Earlier, TRAI had asked all the official channels to decide their prices and accordingly, the consumers can choose the desired channels. However, as per the new regulations, the broadcasting companies will get 80 per cent of the payment made by consumers whereas the cable companies and operators will earn 10 per cent of the remaining 20 per cent.

Thus, the cable operators have been miffed about the meagre amount of payment they are receiving. The protestors have claimed that if the subscriber selects the channels of their choice, then the total payment for consumers to pay for will go up to ₹450 to ₹500 after the addition of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
