Mumbaikars are witnessing unseasonal rains, but it has helped in improving Mumbai's Air Quality Index (AQI). The AQI has reached a "satisfactory" level.

It was two weeks ago when Mumbai had reported poor AQI, especially in BKC, Colaba and Mazgaon. A "satisfactory" AQI has been predicted at least for the next two days by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

On Thursday, December 2, the city's overall AQI was at 78. It means that it was at a satisfactory PM2.5 (Particulate Matter) level in the air. However, areas like Malad and Colaba recorded a "moderate" AQI.

Gufran Beig, programme director of SAFAR, said it is rare that the moderate to satisfactory category of AQI was reported in Mumbai during winter. It can be due to a reversal of sea breeze, he added.

During winters, the air quality is mostly bad due to humidity, low sea breeze, a drop in temperature and high pollution. On the other hand, according to the AQI, Mumbai has the highest concentration of PM10 among the 24 major cities of peninsular India.

Meanwhile, Mumbaikars have witnessed unseasonal rains on the first two days of December, because of which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Santacruz observatory recorded 91 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours at 8:30 am on Thursday, December 2. This marks the city’s highest-ever single-day rainfall during December.
