After observing serpentine queues and crowding due to the sale of alcohol, BMC Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi, a few days back, ordered all the liquor shops in Mumbai to remain closed. Since May 4, 2020, several cities and parts of Maharashtra, have resumed their everyday life, and liquor shops were given permission to open in green zones.

Data revealed by the excise department states that the state generated revenue of ₹150 crores due to liquor sale, since Monday. The data is based on four-day sales, i.e. from Monday, May 4 to Thursday, May 7, 2020.

The department in a previously released report stated that the state had collected close to ₹65 crores in sales, in first two days, and a major portion was from May 5, 2020. The revenue crossed the 100-crore mark on Wednesday, and after selling around 14 lakh litres of IMFL on Thursday, officials added ₹48.14 crores to the tally.

Ever since the government have permissions to open the liquor shops, people were seen flouting social distancing norms, even in red zones like Mumbai and Pune. On Monday, several videos were shared on social media where people were seen waiting for hours, in long queues to purchase liquor. While many just laughed at this behaviour, several criticised the government for this move.

Liquor shops in the state and many parts of India resumed services almost 40 days after the lockdown, and government officials have been keeping a check on those violating guidelines. Maharashtra has a total of 10,822 licensed liquor shops out of which 3,261 have been given the permission to resume operations.

As of May 7, 2020, the total number of cases in Maharashtra increased by 1216 taking the total count to 17,974. While Mumbai crossed the 11,000-mark with 11,398 cases and 437 deaths, Pune has so far registered 1899 cases with 122 deaths.
