As per the orders of the Maharashtra government, restrictions have been put upon the use Plastic and Thermocol from June 23. Strict action will be taken against the offenders that will continue the use of plastic plates, spoons and bowls. However, in order to avoid inconvenience to people who are accustomed to plastic items, Lalbaug market has various substitute products that can replace plastic.
According to the shopkeepers, these items, which are substitutes for the plastic and thermocol, are made of betel nut, sugarcane pulp and corn. Besides, cloth bags are available as well. Before the plastic ban, people opted for plastic but since the plastic ban will be in implementation from June 23, these things have been in demand and will only cost ₹7 to ₹8 only.
A packet consisting of 10 items made of betel nut will cost ₹100 to ₹130 whereas a packet of 25 items made of corn will cost ₹220. The market also offers things made of bagasse, the dry pulp left after the juice from sugarcane is extracted. The packet comprises of 25 items which can cost ₹200. Instead of plastic glasses, people can use paper glasses which will be available for ₹100 for 50 paper glasses.
