According to the latest reports, political parties will be permitted to keep their offices operational at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters in Mumbai. This development comes in the aftermath of municipal administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal permitting offices to remain open so that Mumbaikars can approach civic issues of their vicinity.

Based on accounts, previously former corporators from Congress, Shiv Sena, BJP and Samajwadi Party met Chahal, asking him to permit party offices to remain open. In the BMC headquarters, Shiv Sena, BJP, Congress, NCP and Samajwadi Party have their party offices.

The five-year tenure of the BMC’s elected body ended on March 7. However, the BMC elections have been postponed owing to the OBC reservation issue. The Maharashtra Legislative had unanimously cleared the amendment to the Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and the Industrial Township Act. Other amendments were made in the Maharashtra Village Panchayats and Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis Act causing the local body elections to be delayed.

After this, the Maharashtra government appointed an administrator in the civic body to overlook the daily functioning. Recently, the state government issued a notification to restart the delimitation of wards. Narratives claim that by recommencing the process, the state is looking to buy time to compile empirical data needed for the OBC reservation in the local body polls.
