According to the latest reports, data put together by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) brings to light that action against those not wearing face masks in public places has been curtailed. The data reportedly depicts that presently, nearly 200 people are penalised daily for not donning face masks, the number was considerably higher last year.

Based on accounts, on Monday, March 28, a mere 40 people were caught not wearing masks in public places, for this, INR 8,041 was collected as a fine. However, earlier on March 8, 2,349 were penalised and a fine of INR 4.69 lakh was realised. On March 7, an aggregate fine of INR 5.12 lakh was collected when 2,562 people were caught without face masks in public places.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020, the civic authority had made it mandatory for people to wear face masks in public places. If these norms were found to be flouted, a fine of INR 200 was imposed.

Narratives have also been doing the rounds that the BMC’s contract with the city’s clean up marshals have come to end. However, to keep a check on face masks the BMC will appoint a new agency for penalising citizens who do not wear masks in public, and tenders have been floated for this.

To ensure the adherence to the said resolution, clean-up marshals who were earlier hired to penalise citizens for spitting, dumping debris and littering were given, were given the power to penalise locals for not wearing face masks.
