Coronavirus tally in Mumbai crosses 20,000-mark; Maharashtra witnessed highest single-day jump with 2,347 cases

As of May 17, 2020, Maharashtra tally reaches 33,053 cases. The count in Mumbai and Pune increases to 20,150 cases and 3,454 cases respectively.

Update released by the Government of Maharashtra, on May 17, 2020, revealed that state witnessed the highest single-day jump in coronavirus cases. As of Sunday, a total of 2,347 cases were identified with 63 deaths, taking the tally to 33,053 cases and 1,198 deaths.

On the other hand, Mumbai crossed the 20,000-mark with 20,150 cases and 734 deaths. COVID-19 cases in Pune reach 3,454 cases and 188 deaths. 

While 63 patients succumbed to coronavirus today, the death count in Maharashtra has reached 1198. Out of the 63 patients, 38 are from Mumbai, nine from Pune, six from Aurangabad, three each from Solapur and Raigad, and one each from Thane, Panvel, Latur and Amravati.

Until today, the government has screened 2,73,239 people, out of which 2,40,186 tested negative and 33,053 tested positive for the virus. According to the state portal, 8,628 laboratory tests were conducted between May 1 and 15, 2020, and this showcases a 13-fold increase in the number of tests from March 2020. 

Further, the state is testing more patients when compared to the average tests in India. The report states that 1630 tests are being conducted in India for every 10 lakh people, while the state is conducting 2,137 tests for every 10 lakh population. 

Action plans are being implemented by Uddhav Thackeray-led government and cluster containment is being looked at several locations. Currently, the state has 1688 containment zones. More than 14,000 surveillance squads tested 63.83 lakh people, on May 17, 2020. 

Further, 3,48,508 people have been home quarantined and 17,638 are under institutional quarantine across Maharashtra.
