The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently set up a biogas plant at Chinchpada area and as per reports, the corporation has successfully completed the first project in the state which will produce biogas from excreta and wet waste.

It is said that the biogas production has been started by combining excreta from Chinchpada slum area and wet waste from hotels in Airoli. The finished biogas is being distributed free of cost to slum dwellers.

Recently, the cost for a gas cylinder has increased and this is not affordable by many people in the city. However, with the availability of biogas, citizens can breathe a sigh of relief. Officials from the government informed that the project has been set up with the funds received from MP Rajan Vichare and other CSR funds received from private companies.

As of now, Biogas and 300 units of electricity are being generated from 5 tons of waste per day. Once the amount of wet waste is made available to a maximum capacity, free domestic gas connection will be provided to 25,000 households, and this can be achieved in a few months.

Keeping this aim in mind, local councilor Vijay Chougule has demanded  all the wet waste to be collected from the municipal administration and be given for the project which will benefit a large number of people.

Moreover, many environmental benefits can be observed in the upcoming months with the start of biogas project in the slum area. The availability of domestic gas, free electricity, wet waste and excreta disposal at the localities can reduced the load on the dumping ground and STP plant. If implemented successfully, similar biogas projects can be started at many areas in the city, said Commissioner Abhijit Bangar.
