Bandra Fire Incident: Who is accountable?

After the unfortunate fire incident in Bandra’s Nargis Dutt area where hundreds of houses were destroyed, leaving the people there in a miserable state, the political blame-game over the same has already begun.

On the site, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashish Shelar blamed illegal and unorganised construction to be the root of this mishap while holding Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) accountable for the same.

However, Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar blamed the Maharashtra government by saying that this area is under the jurisdiction of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).

I have inquired and followed up with the concerned department so many times regarding the illegal construction in this area. However,   even if the corporation removed certain slums, more would appear the very next day. This fire incident was the result of the unorganised and illegal construction of slums. The civic body has failed in regulating the construction,” BJP leader Ashish Shelar told Mumbai Live.

Shiv Sena leader and Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar spoke otherwise saying that this area comes under MHADA and the illegal construction shall be stopped by MHADA only. The investigation over the incident, however, is still ongoing.

There is no doubt that the reason for the fire is illegal construction but who is accountable? Local administration and leaders are not present when the construction is happening. The fire department had to face many complications while putting out the fire because of the narrow paths in the area. Four to five stories slums in such narrow space invite such accidents,” Mayor Mahadeshwar told Mumbai Live.

It took hours for the fire department to get control of the situation and the situation got worse after blasts of gas cylinders. These situations will continue to happen until the illegal construction stop.
