On Wednesday, January 5, Mumbai became the first district in Maharashtra to administer one crore first COVID-19 vaccines since the commencement of the drive last January, reports stated. So far, Mumbai has given an aggregate of 1.8 crore vaccine doses that has helped cover 108 per cent with the first jab and 88 per cent with the second jab.

While the island city has achieved this commendable feat in adult vaccination, it is severely lacking to other big districts when it comes to vaccinating those between the age of 15 - 18. According to reports, on Wednesday the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commenced a camp at Matunga's Ruparel College with the anticipation of a similar initiative to be commenced at Kirti College in Dadar

A target has been accorded to inoculate 2,800 college students from January 5 to January 15. While on the first day, a mere 170 students took the jab. Based on accounts, Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner stated that if the on-campus vaccination drive continues without issues it could be extended to other educational institutions. Presently, students are taken to the jumbo centres to get vaccinated.

On the other hand, the BMC, according to the estimated population of 2021 has projected nearly 9.2 lakh beneficiaries from the 15 - 17 age group. Since the commencement of the drive, 15,110 young adults have taken the first jab. Mumbai has had an average of 8,000 vaccination in the said age bracket.
