The Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna dams will provide the city of Mumbai with an additional water supply. An official statement from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was issued for the same on May 7. Despite the fact that there is less water in the reservoirs serving the city than there was the previous year, the local authority claimed that the state government had approved the additional water supply requirements.

During a review meeting, municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said that the amount of water storage that is available is being closely watched. He also advised the public to utilise water wisely as there is a water shortage in the city.

In an official statement Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani said that the state government has already granted more water storage for Mumbai from the Bhatsa and Upper Vaitrana reservoirs, despite the fact that the reservoirs that supply water to the city of Mumbai have less water storage than in prior years.

The administration is closely monitoring the water resources that are currently available, and the available water resources have been planned in such a way that there will be enough water until July 31, 2024, just like every year. Mumbai residents shouldn't be concerned about it anymore. But everyone must use water responsibly, he said.

During the last review meeting, it was disclosed that the seven reservoirs in Mumbai presently contain 16.48 per cent of the yearly demand.

In the statement it was mentioned that at present, 238,552 million litres of water are available in the seven reservoirs that supply water to Mumbai, which represents 16.48 percent of the yearly demand of 1,447,363 million litres. In addition, Mumbai would receive 91,130 million litres from the Upper Vaitrana Dam and an extra 137,000 million litres from the Bhatsa Dam. The administration intends to utilise these reserves through the end of July on a yearly basis. The city government is keeping a careful eye on the state of the water reservoir to ensure a steady supply.

BMC advised Mumbai residents to take preventative steps like taking a bucket bath, avoiding water waste by leaving the tap running, and swiftly rectifying any leaks. It is also recommended that business enterprises implement water-saving measures, like installing nozzles to restrict the flow of faucets and providing water only when requested in restaurants.

People are urged to support conservation efforts by implementing easy habits such as wiping down cars with a damp cloth rather than a hose and using less water while doing laundry. The administration urges all Mumbai citizens to participate in these initiatives to conserve water, highlighting the importance of group involvement.

The administration's goal in putting these policies into place is to guarantee Mumbai's sufficient water supply while also promoting sustainability and conscientious water use across the city.
