BMC Budget 2020: Praveen Pardeshi unveils his first budget of ₹33,341 crore

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi on Tuesday unveiled his first budget for the financial year 2020-21. The budget of ₹33,341 crores was presented by the BMC Commissioner to Standing Committee Chairman Yashwant Jadhav. In 2019-20, the BMC budget was estimated at ₹30,692 crores. However, this year the civic body budget has increased to ₹33,341. The budget has registered a hike by ₹2,649 crore which is an 8.6 per cent increase. 

The session of BMC Budget 2020 started with the Education budget which saw a hike of  Approximately 7.7 Per Cent


Health

BMC Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi also presented the health budget allocating ₹4260.34 crores for the financial year 2020-21. During the previous budget, the civic body had earmarked ₹4,151 crores for health. There has been a 3 per cent increase in the health budget for the financial year 2020-21 as compared to last year. Moreover, the civic body has allocated ₹2 crores to combat the threat of coronavirus. 


Infrastructure 

The BMC has allocated ₹14,637.76 crore for the infrastructure projects which includes Mumbai Coastal road project,  Goregaon Mulund Link Road project and others. The budget for the Mumbai coastal road project has been increased by 25 per cent. 

In the financial year 2020-21, the budget for Mumbai coastal road project is ₹2,000 crore. The BMC had allocated ₹1,600 crores in 2018 for the Mumbai coastal road project. The construction work for the same was stopped after Bombay High Court put a stay. The civic body has set aside ₹300 crores for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road project which will be extended by 12.2 km for connecting east and west part of the city.

Brihanmumbai Electricity and Supply Tourism (BEST)

Meanwhile, ₹1,500 has been allocated for BEST. The amount will be used for repayment of procured loans, fulfil financial obligations regarding wave management and implementation of Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) projects.

Tourism

BMC has also announced to have a dedicated department for tourism and a proposal for the same has been submitted. The day to day activities of it will be conducted by external experts and accrediting travel agents and allocated Rs 183.03 crore for the same. BMC has proposed to beautify the Worli fort by providing decorative illumination with energy-efficient LED which can be viewed from the Worli sea link.

Garden Department

In the BMC budget 2020-21, ₹226.77 crores have been proposed for the garden department. Nearly 4,00,000 plants are to be planted in 65 BMC plots. This will be implemented based on urban forestry method pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. Provision of ₹183.03 crores has also been proposed for natural inheritance and heritage.

 

Other Departments

The budget provision of ₹170.79 crores has been proposed for water conveyance and tunnel works. Funds of ₹6 crores have been proposed for re-engineering and reconstruction of water treatment plants. The civic body has also made an allocation of ₹15 crores to start-up ideas focused on helping BMC with problem-solving. This financial aid will be provided under the provision allocated for Mumbai Incubation Labs.
