The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s ambitious Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project at Deonar is expected to become operational by June 2026, according to the 2026–27 municipal budget.

The project was originally scheduled for completion by October 2025. Once operational, it will process 600 tonnes of waste per day and generate 7 megawatts of clean electricity, strengthening Mumbai’s sustainable waste management and renewable energy goals.

Under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department, a provision of INR 364.62 crore has been made in the revised estimates for 2025–26. Additionally, INR 580.82 crore has been allocated in the 2026–27 financial year for various waste management initiatives across Mumbai.

Mulund Dumping Ground

At the Mulund dumping ground, 48.13 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste had been processed by June 30, 2025. The remaining 22 lakh MT is expected to be completely cleared by March 2026, making approximately 24 hectares of land available for redevelopment.

Deonar Dumping Ground

At the Deonar dumping ground, the BMC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) to set up a Bio-CNG plant with a capacity to process 500 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day. This project is expected to be operational by October 2027.

Additionally, work is underway at Deonar to treat 185 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste spread over 110 hectares through the bioremediation process. The project is estimated to cost INR 3,035.55 crore and is targeted for completion by March 2029.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste

For the management of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, two processing plants with a capacity of 600 tonnes per day each have been set up at Daighar and Dahisar. By November 2025, more than 2.30 lakh metric tonnes of C&D waste had been processed at these facilities.

Furthermore, there is a proposal to modernize the refuse transfer stations at Versova and Gorai, with the work scheduled for completion by January 2028.
