In recent developments, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is reportedly considering making the process of fining citizens for not wearing face masks online.

This comes after several citizens complained of the officials being rude or arrogant while collecting fines from the people across the city. Moreover, clean-up marshals have been at the centre of controversy for a long time for allegedly harassing citizens over the implementation of mandatory face mask rule.

According to reports, several videos of verbal and physical fights between clean-up marshals and citizens over masks have gone viral. Last Tuesday, a fight broke out between people and clean-up marshals after an argument over face masks in Matunga.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks were made mandatory to curb the instances of the disease. However, several citizens were found flouting the rules due to which a fine of INR 200 was imposed by the civic body to implement the rule.

Meanwhile, across the city, there are about 750 clean-up marshals appointed at key locations like railway stations, tourist places, bus stops to enforce mandatory protocols. As per recent reports, INR 71 crores has been collected from people as fine for not wearing face masks so far.
