Heavy rainfall lashed the city of Mumbai on July 17 and 18, 2021, and the information shared by the weather experts state that over 200 mm of rain was recorded in just a few hours. In order to control the situation, officials and teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were on duty for  24 hours a day. Information regarding the same was shared by Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also reviewed the situation in Mumbai via online meetings, where Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal shared the details about the wall collapse incident reported in two places in Mumbai. Data shared by the BMC reported that a total of 27 people died in the two major accidents. Rescue and relief work was carried out immediately at the sites.

He also mentioned about meeting Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray and Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide who also passed necessary instructions to the concerned departments. Aaditya Thackeray recently visited the locations where wall collapse incidents were reported. He interacted with the residents and offered condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the incident. CM Uddhav Thackeray also announced relief package for the heirs of the deceased. Besides this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced compensation for the families of those who lost their beloved members and those who were injured too.

Adding more information about the accumulation of rain water on the suburban railway tracks, Iqbal Singh Chahal said that the construction of Parjanya Jal Udhanchan Kendra at Mahul will start soon and once completed, the problem of water storage in Kurla, Shiv, Chunabhatti and nearby areas will be resolved.

Many places in the city reported landslides and sharing details about the same, he mentioned that the municipal administration is keeping a close eye on all the locations. Necessary measures have been implemented to evacuate the dangerous buildings and relocate the residents to safer locations. 

Talking about health and safety measures, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Suresh Kakani said that necessary preventive measures were taken to prevent the spread of malaria, dengue and leptospirosis. The incidence of malaria is still under control and safety guidelines are in places to tackle the situation.

Moreover, the water treatment plant is in operation and the Deputy Commissioner (Special Engineering) of the Corporation, Ajay Rathore, said that the system of both the new and old Udhanchan centers in the Bhandup complex is gradually coming into operation. The main reservoir at Bhandup is raising the water level, however, there is a possibility of low pressure water supply for a day. Once resolved, all the systems will be operational and the water supply will be back to normal.
