Amid the approaching monsoon, reports, claim that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finished a mere 34 per cent of its drain-cleaning target. Earlier, BMC Chief Iqbal Singh Chahal had asked that the nullah cleaning be done in double shifts to ensure that the work can be completed by May 15.
Flooding in the city is a common phenomenon during Mumbai rains. Based on accounts, the nullah cleaning work was delayed this year.
Moreover, narratives claim that the civic body’s standing committee before the end of its term approved the proposal to clean drains in a mere one zone of the seven zones in Mumbai.
Later, when Chahal became the administrator, the remaining proposals were cleared. It has been reported that the civic body will be incurring expenses worth INR 162 crore for the desilting job.
A report by Mid-Day remarks that from the yearly target of removing slits from nullahs as well as the Mithi river, before monsoon 75 per cent of the work is completed, during monsoon 10 per cent is completed and after monsoon 15 per cent is done.
The account adds that this year, the civic body has given a target of removing 4.63 lakh metric tonnes of silt from nullahs and 2.75 lakh metric tonnes of sediments from Mithi. Further, it mentions that the civic body wishes to remove 3.48 lakh tonnes of silt from nullahs prior to May 31.
