According to the latest reports, considering the fall in COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) could soon revisit its decision to keep all the field or jumbo hospitals functional. It has been reported that the jumbo centres were constructed to accommodate over 1,000 patients each. These were strategically placed through the east, west and central parts of Mumbai.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani was quoted by accounts elaborating on how while they are downsizing, they have asked deans of the jumbo centres to only keep certain wards active. He added that there aren’t any plans presently to keep only one or two centres functional.

Kakani reportedly elucidated that they have to be watchful for another 15 days for any increase in cases considering they are unlocking further. He remarked that the facilities that are operational aren’t so in one part of the city, but are spread across all areas.

The civic authority’s COVID-19 management system includes mild to moderate cases being admitted to jumbo centres, severe cases being admitted to hospitals. Kakani claimed that when the third wave ends, the civic body could put the majority of the jumbo hospitals in reserve so that they can be re-activated promptly provided a surge.
