The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to keep a check on crowds and ensure COVID-19 protocols are followed.

This development came days ahead of Christmas and New Year Parties that place every year between December 25 and 31.

Amid rising concerns over the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, the civic body said that about two to four teams would be formed in each of the 24 wards to ensure that people abide by rules at social gatherings and take action against those who don’t.

The BMC officials stated that apart from individuals flouting the pandemic norms, action will be taken against organisers and restaurant owners if COVID-related protocols are violated.

Considering the fear of the second wave, last year, the BMC had not granted permission for organising Christmas and New Year parties. But this year they will and keep a close watch on the celebrations too as the civic body and state government has claimed that the COVID-19 cases are under control. However, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope hinted of a possible wave due to Omicron.

On Tuesday, December 14, the Dy. Commissioner of Police (Operations) and Executive Magistrate Greater Mumbai, Chaitanya S issued an order, wherein the COVID-19 restrictions in Greater Mumbai were extended till December 31. Moreover, news agency ANI reported that section 144 CrPC was imposed in Mumbai up to midnight on New Year's eve in light of the increase in Omicron cases in the city
