December 20 onwards, the Mumbai Traffic Police will commence a special drive to crack down on drink driving in the island city, reports stated. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the plan of the traffic police is to undertake requisite measures to utilize breath analyzers whilst on the special initiative. 

Over 90 nakabandi points will be put up at strategic locations in Mumbai. Herein various methodologies will be utilized to crack down on drink driving. According to accounts, a senior traffic police official elaborated on how if required, blood samples of the motorists will also be collected. 

Based on the amended Motor Vehicles Act 2019, fines for drink driving or driving under the influence of drugs has been increased. This has been done from INR 2,000 to INR 10,000 and INR 3,000 to INR 15,000, respectively. 

Earlier, the law for taking a fine of INR 3,000 for a repeat offence of drink driving or driving under the influence of alcohol was only if the second offence was done in three years of the previous one. But, this has now been amended by means of the new law. 

On the other hand, based on the data from the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP), on Sunday and Monday, across Maharashtra, the traffic police issued 57,977 e-challans to motorists collecting fines that are aggregately worth INR 4.51 crore, highlighted narratives.
