Citizens Can Now Avail Services From BMC's WhatsApp Chatbot

On Friday, January 14, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray launched the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) WhatsApp Chatbot that entails a variety of services.

According to reports, the chatbot has been launched for more than 80 citizens services and can be accessed in various languages that include English and Marathi. To get started, citizens need to send a "Hi" to 8999228999.

The BMC took to Twitter to announce this initiative and said, "Mumbai, we are just a ‘Hi’ away now! WhatsApp us a 'Hi' on 8999228999 to avail services from grievance redressal to license renewal."

Based on accounts, those in attendance via video conferencing included Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Aaditya Thackeray, District Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, amongst others. 

While speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister is reported to have elaborated on how the civic authority looks to offer more than 80 facilities to the citizens utilizing the WhatsApp chatbot that include the likes of a water bill, house rent, essential municipal services and electricity bill payment amongst others. 

Some of the services that the citizens can utilize by the means of this chatbot include:

  • Filing a civic grievance
  • Booking a vaccination slot
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Shop License 

Thackeray was quoted by narratives elucidating on how it is a matter of great pleasure that the body is taking advantage of information technology. He believes this is a model of a transparent and accountable corporation.
