The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed to appoint an urban design consultant to work on its street enhancement program across Mumbai, reports stated. The consultant will be told to curate a comprehensive report of streets that can be made pedestrian-friendly as well as aesthetically better.

According to reports, daily the BMC manages nearly 1,950-km of roads at many of which the footpaths are either encroached or obstructed. Officials from the roads and traffic department remarked that the civic body has invited a Request For Proposal (RFP) for the consultant's appointment who will be hired for the coming three years, claimed narratives. 

A detailed survey of the city's streets, curation of a 3D-based visualisation of plans, identification of challenges across Mumbai, solutions to make streets pedestrian-friendly, installation of street furniture will have to be undertaken by the urban designer. 

Based on accounts, an official remarked on how the consultant will bring uniformity in the development and beautification of the roads to ensure that Mumbai's aesthetically good looking.

Previously, the BMC had brought in force the "pedestrian first policy" to ensure that its footpaths are free of encroachments. For this purpose, INR 50 crore was also allocated in the 2020-21 budget. However, reports claim that minimal progress was undertaken in the project which officials attribute to the COVID-19 pandemic.
