Mumbai Coastal Road: Excavation Of First Tunnel From Priyadarshani Park To Marine Drive Completed

The civic body claims to have finished over 20 per cent of the Coastal Road Project work and has set a deadline of July 2023 to finish the entire project.

On Monday, January 10, the first breakthrough of India's largest Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was finished with the tunnel works for the 10-km-long Mumbai Coastal Road project was partially finished, a year after the work commenced in January 2021, reports stated. 

According to accounts, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials elaborated on how the TBM named Mavla finished one side of the 2-km-long tunnel from Priyadarshini Park to Marine Drive. The 3.45-km-long twin undersea tunnel from Priyadarshini Park to Marine Drive and the remaining portion of the work will be undertaken without the boring machine. 

Based on narratives, the BMC had purchased parts of the TBM from China. Upon assembling the work commenced in January 2021 when it arrived in India back in April 2020.

Addressing the ceremony via video conferencing, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said, "Excavation of the 1st Tunnel from Priyadarshani Park to Marine Drive of the Mumbai Coastal Road is completed today! Work began on 11th January 2021".

Reports have quoted a BMC official from the Coastal Road Department who elucidated on how works on the other side of the tunnel will commence by April 2022 and could be completed by December 2022.
