The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking to tunnel under undeveloped open spaces in an attempt to curate parking areas, reported the Times of India.

According to the accounts, BMC administrator, Iqbal Singh Chahal has asked all 24 wards to identify and submit one undeveloped recreation ground or playground reserved plot, below which an underground parking lot can be made.

Based on the narrative, the order comes in the aftermath of BJP MLA, Atul Bhatkhalkar demanding that underground parking lots be made to ease vehicular movement.

The BMC's traffic department was quoted in the report elaborating on how owing to the rise in the number of vehicles, each ward is witnessing parking deficiencies.

This they believe is propelling people to park on the roads which leads to hindrances. Therefore, to address this issue, the civic body has decided to identify at least one open recreation ground or playground reserved plot to offer underground parking. They added that the proposal has to be submitted in a week for approval.

Bhatkhalkar in the report claimed that the first project for the underground parking will be in Kandivali's Manohar Parrikar playground. He elaborated on how for the project, a consultant has been appointed. However, he believes that the civic authority should ponder having charging units at the parking lots for electric vehicles
