The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to install sound-barriers on old flyovers to shield citizens living nearby from noise pollution.

Most of the newly constructed bridges already have such barriers. However, a committee has been formed to conduct a survey of flyovers constructed before 2017.

The report is expected to be submitted in the next one month. After that, the civic authorities will finalise the number of flyovers that will have the system.

As per the provisions of the Mumbai Development Plan, the municipality started installing sound barriers on newly constructed bridges in the city.

A sound barrier will be installed on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) flyover. The Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri is also going to have a similar system. The same provision has now been amended for existing flyovers.

A committee of the Roads and Bridges Department is surveying the old flyovers. The civic body will ensure that the installation of this system does not affect the structure, officials added.

Officials further stated that they will try to include flyovers and residential buildings near schools in the priority list. Locations will be identified based on the proximity of buildings to flyovers. These sound barriers will be installed in the next two years.

The decision has been taken as part of the administrative body's development plan 2034, an official of the bridge department said.

The municipality had asked to do so following complaints of noise pollution from Borivali, Dadar and Paral terminals, Matunga Circle and Sion flyovers. However, the problem of many buildings and corridors adjacent to express highways and other flyovers still persists.
