Finding a public washroom which is clean is quite difficult in India and there have been a number of debates over this issue. Also, sometimes, washrooms which are clean are not accessible but that’s soon going to change. Thanks to the Swacch Bharat Mission, one can visit a nearby petrol pump and use their washroom.

There are approximately 423 petrol pumps in the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), as a part of the Swacch Bharat Mission, have requested all petrol pump owners to allow the public to use their washrooms for free.

Petrol Pump owners have also been asked to keep the washrooms clean and maintain it.

The civic administration has issued a circular in this regards and notified all ward officers to inform the pump owners too.

After several meetings with office-bearers and members of the Petrol Dealers’ Association, it was agreed that the public would be given access to the toilets. Initially, a few owners had shown strong opposition stating allowing anyone in the toilets of the fuel pumps can be dangerous.
