According to the latest reports, the standing committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday, March 7, cleared over 300 proposals related to many civic development works. This transpired just a day before the five-year tenure of the elected body ended and an administrator was appointed.

Based on accounts, proposals amounting to nearly INR 2,500 crore were cleared with almost no discussion in 35 minutes. Nearly 356 proposals were tabled for clearance on Monday which included 95 from the previous standing committee meeting.

It has been reported that the majority of the proposals were about development works as well as expenses in cognizance with the civic body’s public health department. From those cleared included INR 400 crore for construction and widening of various drainage and water supply networks of Mumbai.

Additionally, INR 300 crore were for improvement and desilting works of the Storm Water Drains and proposals amounting to over INR 100 crore were tabled for road repair works. For those unversed, the standing committee has the authority to clear expenditure proposals.

Yashwant Jadhav who was the standing committee chairperson justified this move in the “larger interest of the common public”, even with the BJP protesting against the same. The last standing committee was conducted in the backdrop of the Income Tax Department conducting a raid at Jadhav’s residence.
