BMC’s Standing Committee Passes Proposals Over Rs 1,000 crore

According to the latest reports, on Wednesday, March 2, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) standing committee passed 85 proposals worth over INR 1,000 crore from the aggregate of more than 180 proposals of over INR 2,300 crore.

Based on accounts, a considerable number of those passed were of ward level civic works and post facto emergency expenses during COVID-19. This was followed by projects that included the likes of Hancock Bridge and the Ghatkopar Mankhurd Link Road flyover.

It has been reported that while the proposal was cleared in an hour, over half of the proposals were held back by the standing committee. Those held back include the likes of trenching, desilting, road, bridges repair and maintenance works.

Additionally, the standing committee members opposed the administration’s proposal to approve INR 19 crore cost escalation project for the GMLR project. In spite of the opposition, the committee passed it while stating increased cost is for the payment of Goods Services Tax that wasn’t taken into consideration while giving the contract earlier, cited narratives.

Apart from this, one proposal to reserve INR 4,000 crore as a “special project fund” to see to it that no mega development projects in Mumbai have to go through a financial crunch. The money will also be used on rejuvenation works near Mithi, Poisar and Dahisar rivers along with on stormwater pumping stations followed by for coronavirus infrastructure.

Yashwant Jadhav, Shiv Sena Corporator and standing committee chairman, was quoted in accounts elaborating on how the remaining proposals will be cleared on Monday the last standing committee since many members didn’t get the time to speak. On the other hand, BJP members conducted a protest in the standing committee alleging corruption, claimed reports.
