According to the latest reports, considering the fall of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stopped conducting mass testing at railway stations, beaches amongst other public places. It has been reported that the number of daily coronavirus tests done fell from 70,000 in early January to nearly 20,000 in the past few days.

Since the commencement of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, more than 1.6 crore tests have been undertaken so far. BMC officials have been quoted in accounts elaborating on how the fall in testing reflects the low caseload presently.

The BMC's executive health officer Dr Mangala Gomare reportedly elucidated on how currently there aren't any clusters or high-risk areas in the city and the number of daily cases is between 100 and 200.

Another cause for the fall in testing is the central government advisory that recommended testing only in symptomatic patients, claimed a BMC official, stated accounts. The official remarked that since the daily positivity rate is between 0.5 per cent and 1 per cent, testing will be promptly increased if they see a rise in the positivity rate.

On the other hand, Mumbai completed 2 crore COVID-19 vaccinations on Wednesday, February 23 and became the first district in Maharashtra to attain the landmark. Similarly, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that the Mumbaikars have been following all rules and restrictions which she believes is helping in reining in the spread of the infection.
