The Swachhata app, which was launched by the Centre on December 28 to resolve sanitation and garbage-related complaints of citizens, has registered 66,000 downloads in Mumbai so far. As civic administration had appealed to the citizens to make most of the app, it has received 46,000 complaints and nearly 1.5 thousand people are yet to seek redressals for their complaints.

The BMC is focusing on increasing the number of downloads of the Swachhata-MOHUA app.

Citizens, however, have said the civic administration need to take suo moto steps to resolve garbage issues Instead of improving its Swachh Bharat ranking. However, the corporation is ensuring a robust mechanism for cleaning the city.

One of the criteria based on which Swachh Sarvekshan (cleanliness survey) reward points will be awarded is the app usage. The BMC is hoping to reach its target of securing 2.5 lakh downloads in order to score more points.

According to a senior civic officer, the objective is not on increasing popularity by improving the ranking, rather reckoning people to use the app to make valuable suggestions and register complaints.

Officials are bound to resolve citizens’ complaints within 24 hours once the complaint is registered. All civic officials have been directed to download and promote the app, as well as report garbage nuisances in the city. Civic officials claim that increased citizen feedback will improve the civic body’s ranking.
