According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install 28 floodgates in the Mithi River to avert flooding owing to overflowing water from the river. It is known to all that yearly during monsoon, Mithi River’s water level overflows. This invariably results in flooding in areas such as Sion, Chunabhatti, Kurla and Ghatkopar.

Senior officials have been quoted in an account by the Hindustan Times elaborating on how the purpose is to prevent water overflowing and entering the residential areas as well as the railway tracks. These floodgates, according to civic officials will be put up at the tidal zones from Mahim Creek. It will then be 8 kilometres deep inside the Mumbai suburb from the creek.

P Velrasu, additional municipal commissioner (Projects) through the narrative elucidated on how the gates will operate vertically considering the constraint in space. He added that these gates will be put to use during high tides which will act as damage control while pumping the water out.

Velrasu then remarked on how three international firms have shown interest in the project and have given their presentation to the BMC. He however added that the final appointment will be done through tenders which will be floated in the next 15 days.

Moreover, the civic authority has estimated a budget of INR 1,600 crore for the project with a three-year deadline. Velrasu has attributed the deadline to the rehabilitation of the slums.
