The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to procure S-gene RT-PCR kits which are utilized for the early detection of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, stated reports. For the purchase of these kits for all civic-run coronavirus testing centres, tenders will soon be floated, mentioned officials from the health department.
According to accounts, the non-presence of the S-gene in the sample is an indication of the possibility of the Omicron variant. Known as the S-gene Target Failure (SGTF) test, it helps in the early detection of the variant, prior to the genome sequencing.
Genome sequencing results take nearly four to five days, with the machine needing almost 350 samples to commence the test, mentioned an official from the civic authority in narratives.
A BMC official elaborated on how in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, in the case of the Omicron variant, the absence of the S-gene can be sought with the RT-PCR test. This invariably helps offer prompt details on a suspected Omicron case, stated accounts.
The official added that for confirmation of Omicron, samples can then be sent for genome sequencing. Therefore, RT-PCR tests that help detect the S-gene will enable them to undertake prompt precautionary measures.
Additionally, at Kasturba and KEM Hospital, the civic body has already procured nearly 850 kits for S-gene detection for emergency use. But, for testing on a larger scale, more kits are needed thus a tender will be called for, claimed another BMC official in reports.
As of now, Maharashtra has 10 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant. Whilst the general RT-PCR test utilized by the civic body costs INR 250, the S-gene one costs INR 350.
