Taking into account 664 buildings in Mumbai that are in ruins and dangerous to live in, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now regaining control over the situation. BMC chief Ajoy Mehta has directed the officials to evacuate the 104 buildings against which legal action is pending.

Mehta has asked the officials to disconnect the electric and water supply in these buildings or take police help if required to evict the buildings if the occupants resist.

The BMC has notified 664 buildings that fall under the most dangerous C-1 category, out of which it has managed to evacuate 101 and demolished 99 structures as of March. It has disconnected the electric and water supply of 144 C1 category buildings and ensured that the services are not reinstalled.

For buildings more than 30 years old, a structural audit is required. The BMC plans to send fresh notices to such buildings too, as a part of its pre-monsoon preparation plan.

Section 354 Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act, 1888

Under this Act, the BMC sends notices to residents in dangerous buildings and asks them to vacate the premises within seven days. The police can also use their force to evict people with the help of this Act.
