Mumbai Mahanagarpalika Karyalayeen Karmachari Sanghatana - the BMC Employees’ Union - has asked for a double bonus before Diwali this year claiming that the civic body employees have done a great job during the pandemic.

In a letter addressed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal, the union leader Prakash Devdas said that since the officials “have done a fabulous job this year,” they “must” get a double bonus before Diwali 2020.

When asked about the letter, Chahal said “This year, the BMC’s revenue has come down by 40 per cent,” while not commenting any further on the demands of the union.

The BMC Municipal Engineers Association has opposed this move in a convening committee meeting held recently. “We can understand that the BMC is going through troubled times financially, just as other government organisations. It is difficult to pay even monthly salaries. We have opposed this move,” President of the Association, Sainath Rajadhyaksha said.

A separate BMC officer pointed out that that the Disaster Management Act and the Epidemic Diseases Act are in effect and those looking to actively pursue this campaign or create agitations may have to face strict action. It’s well known that the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns have dug a big hole in the BMC’s coffers as revenues have fallen dramatically.
