On Friday, July 22, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) apprised the Bombay High Court that it had accorded extension till September 30 to put up Marathi signboards in Devanagari script in shops and establishments in Mumbai, reports stated.

According to accounts, the Indian Hotel and Restaurants Association (AHAR) submitted that its members will follow the direction in the extended time period. After this, the court disposed of the petition. Earlier on July 8, the BMC had informed the HC that its shops and establishment department had sent a proposal to the BMC Commissioner, asking for a three-month extension.

Based on narratives, a division bench was hearing the AHAR's plea that argued that it challenged the validity of the first deadline of May 31 established by the BMC. The petitioner reportedly added that new requirements for changing the signboards were prescribed by the BMC in accordance with an act. However, the amendment it issued did not mention a fixed time period.

Reports suggest that the BMC proclaimed a deadline of May 31 by means of newspaper advertisements and establishments were also issued notices. The petition is believed to have added that the failure to follow the requirement by the deadline would attract a penalty of up to INR 5,000 and thus, it should be protected from the same till the plea is heard.

Earlier the BMC had extended the deadline for mounting Marathi signboards in all shops to June 30. It had claimed to survey Mumbai for 8-10 days and take action against those who do not follow the order. Now, the BMC counsel had informed the judiciary that the deadline has been extended to September 30, this year.
