Bread Prices Rise in Mumbai Following Milk Price Hike

Days after milk prices in Mumbai increased by INR 2 per litre, bread prices have also gone up by as much as INR 5 per packet. The hike has been attributed to rising input costs, including expensive imported raw materials used for plastic packaging, higher transportation expenses, and the weakening value of the rupee.

According to a report by The Times of India, Modern Bread increased prices of its basic bread variants on May 16, pushing some products to record-high prices. Other major brands such as Britannia and Wibs are also expected to revise their prices soon.

Revised Bread Prices

• 400 gm sandwich loaf: INR 40 to INR 45

• Whole wheat bread: INR 55 to INR 60

• Multigrain bread: INR 60 to INR 65

• Small brown loaf: INR 28 to INR 30

• White loaf: INR 20 to INR 22

• Brown bread: INR 45 to INR 50

Bakery owners said the increase is driven by higher transportation charges and rising costs of preservatives, salt, plastic powder used in packaging materials, cooking gas, and fuel.

Industry sources pointed out that India imports a significant amount of plastic raw material used for packaging, and the weakening rupee has made these imports more expensive.

Fuel price hikes have further added to the burden. Petrol and diesel prices were recently increased by around 90 paise per litre after an earlier hike of INR 3 per litre. CNG prices in cities such as Mumbai and Delhi were also raised by INR 2 per kg, followed by another increase of INR 1 per kg, pushing up delivery and logistics costs.
