Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the compound wall of a residential building in South Mumbai's Banganga area had collapsed in the evening on Saturday, August 28, 2021. As per reports, the building in the Malabar Hill locality collapsed at approximately 4:15pm. One person, a 37-year-old man, Hitesh Shivram Bhuvad, was declared dead after he was removed the debris and taken to Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Data released by the BMC revealed that the building was developed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). The Assistant Commissioner of Ward-D, Prashant Gaikwad, told the Hindustan Times that a crack had developed on the compound wall of the residential building which the residents were getting repaired. However, the same collapsed during the repair work which was being conducted by the residents and nearby locals, one among whom was the deceased.

Hitesh was reported dead at 5.20pm when he was taken to the hospital. No further casualties or injuries have been reported yet. Officials from the BMC said that the teams from MHADA, disaster management departments, police and fire brigade rushed to the spot immediately to take necessary steps.

Over the last few months, several such events have been reported in Mumbai. Earlier in August, a Public toilet in Poisar collapsed injuring one person. Three others were rescued safely. As per reports, the injured was a 28-year-old man who was rushed to the Kandivali-based Shatabdi Hospital for further treatment. Upon preliminary treatment, doctors said that his condition was stable.

Besides this, wall collpases have been reported in Govandi, Chembur, Vikhroli and other areas in the city. Considering these, the civic body has started taking necessary steps to reduce such incidents whereby many lives have been claimed.
