At least 82 women inmates from Byculla Jail were admitted to JJ Hospital on Friday morning. While the patients are being screened for any infections, doctors at the hospital said that the patients are in a stable condition.

The prisoners complained of vomiting and abdominal pain. Jail authorities said that all the inmates are being monitored and the number could go up. The preliminary report suggests that contaminated water could be the cause.

In a press conference, JJ Hospital in-charge Dr Mukund Tayade said that all inmates, including two pregnant women and a four-month-old infant, were brought in at 9:40 AM. They have been admitted to the Neurological department as well as the Disaster department of the hospital. While the pregnant woman is being kept in the Gynaecology ward, the child is being treated in the Pediatrics department.

The medical unit head, Dr Vikar Shaikh told that all inmates are served the same food; rice, lentils, vegetables and pulses form a staple part of their diet. It is possible that the food might have been contaminated, he said.
