The nurses at PD Hinduja Hospital have been protesting outside the hospital building in Mahim. The nurses have staged protests demanding COVID-19 tests be done for all staffers and in-houses admission of staffers. The demands have been made in the wake of rising in the number of infected among the staffers.

However, the hospital administration has replied to the nurses explaining that they are merely following the guideline laid by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which only allows admission of symptomatic patients. The administration further added that currently, the hospital is filled to capacity.

The issue came to light after a video of a nurse from Hinduja Hospital was quarantined at NSCI. She had tested positive for coronavirus and a video from the quarantine center has started going viral on social media. The nurse had complained that the condition of the quarantine facility was poor and there was no one available to give medicines. She also stated that the condition of toilets was unbearable.

So far, four nurses from Hinduja Hospital have tested positive. Therefore, the nurses have demanded two things: COVID-19 testing for all staff and admitting the four nurses who tested positive, to the hospital.

“We want to be treated in the same manner as other patients. We are working on the frontline, helping doctors and taking care of COVID-19 patients; but the hospital has shrugged off its responsibility towards us, which is totally wrong,” a nurse from Hinduja Hospital told FPJ.

Jibin TC, president of United Nurses Association (UNA), Maharashtra, said that they have written a letter to the administration iterating the demands. He added that other private hospitals, whose staff have tested positive are being admitted to their respective hospitals, then why has Hinduja refuted to do the same.

On the other hand, a Hinduja hospital spokesperson said that before beginning their duty, all staffers are monitored for any COVID-19 symptoms, and any staffer showing symptoms were being tested.

“As per the BMC guidelines, we can only admit symptomatic patients, while all asymptomatic patients are being asked to quarantine in facilities listed by the BMC, and a daily record is provided to it. Most beds at the hospital for serious Covid-19 patients are full, and some ICU beds are reserved for the BMC, as per rules, and currently, asymptomatic patients, including our own medical and non-medical staff cannot be admitted in the hospital due to the rules,” reads the statement by the hospital.
