Mumbai has been termed as the hotspot for coronavirus as it recorded 4,205 cases i.e. almost 62 per cent of the total cases (6,711), in the state. The city's worst affected areas have received some respite in the past couple of days.

As of April 22, as many as 189 of the 930 containment zones in the city have been dropped off the list. The decision of taking these places off the list was taken after it was found that there had been no new COVID-19 positive case from these places in the last 14 days. However, over 300 areas in the city still continue to be in the red zone.

A containment zone is where a positive patient or/and his contacts live. According to a senior ward level official, the authorities monitor if there are any new COVID-19 patients in the area during the 14-day period and if there is no patient, a decision is made at the ward level to release the area.

He added that after releasing the area if new patients emerge, the officials impose another 14-day quarantine.

Some of the pivotal areas that have been released consist of buildings/chawls on:

  • Ridge Road in Malabar Hills
  • Arab Lane
  • Grant Road
  • Forjett Street
  • Antop Hill, Wadala
  • Hiranandani, Powai
  • IC Colony
  • Parel
  • Sewri
  • Kanamwar Nagar, Vikhroli
  • Lalbaug

Yesterday on April 23, nine containment zones in Mumbai's worst-affected area, G-South ward were released. G-South ward consists of areas such as Prabhadevi and Worli, which were termed as hotspots and were sealed by the BMC. These nine zones are home for close to 4,000 people and out of these 48 had tested positive in these areas.

On the other hand, the number of new cases in Mira-Bhayander are also declining.

Update as of April 24, 4:00 pm
