According to the latest study by a group of researchers, the anticipated third wave of the coronavirus is likely to hit India in August which may reach its peak in October. They also noted that the rise in coronavirus cases will push the third wave.

A research team led by professors Mathukumalli Vidyasagar and Manindra Agrawal at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad and Kanpur have predicted that India is expected to report less than 1,00,000 infections daily in the best-case scenario or nearly 1,50,000 in the worst scenario.

The researchers said that their prediction is based on a mathematical model. The states reporting a high number of cases like Kerala and Maharashtra may play a significant role in skewing the case count during the third wave, said researchers to Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, Agrawal, who is also a scientist of a government panel who has been tasked with modelling COVID-19 cases had mentioned that the possible third wave of coronavirus may see half the daily cases recorded during the second wave. In addition, it can hit its peak between October-November if COVID-appropriate behaviour is not followed.

Therefore, the Centre has currently directed 10 states which include Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and northeastern regions such as -- Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur -- to take steps to contain the spread of coronavirus.

On the other hand, the research also states that the third wave is unlikely to be as brutal as the second wave, where India reported 400,000-plus daily cases.
