Serious allegations have been raised in connection with a slum rehabilitation and redevelopment project in Mumbai’s Sion Koliwada area after multiple homes were allegedly demolished without prior notice. A case has been registered against two developers and at least 56 others following complaints that a large group entered the settlement and carried out demolitions before police intervention could take place. As a result, several families have been displaced and are currently seeking temporary accommodation.
The redevelopment project, which has reportedly been pending since 2006, was planned to include a combination of residential and commercial structures. Despite the passage of nearly two decades, concerns have continued to be raised by residents regarding delays, procedural lapses, and changes in project ownership. It has been stated that the project was initially handled by one developer before being transferred to another, leading to confusion and disputes over obligations owed to slum dwellers.
According to the complaint, a group of nearly 40 to 50 individuals was brought to the settlement on a recent weekday. It was alleged that residents were informed that demolition orders had been issued by the developer. The presence of bouncers and demolition equipment was also mentioned. Before authorities could be alerted, several houses were reportedly razed, resulting in financial losses and emotional distress for affected families.
Multiple criminal charges have been invoked in the case, including criminal trespass, unlawful assembly, rioting, mischief causing significant property damage, intimidation, and threats involving potential violence. It has been alleged that the actions were carried out with the intent to forcibly evict residents without following due process.
Irregularities in rehabilitation arrangements were also highlighted in the complaint. It was stated that, as per mandatory norms, eligible slum dwellers are required to receive rental compensation for a fixed period during redevelopment. However, it was alleged that only partial rent was paid, falling significantly short of the required duration. Concerns were further raised about changes made to the redevelopment plan and to official annexures that list eligible beneficiaries.
Allegations of threats issued to residents during the incident were also recorded in the complaint. It was stated that repeated representations had been made to the Slum Rehabilitation Authority over several years, seeking intervention and corrective action. Despite these efforts, grievances were reportedly left unresolved. Attempts to obtain responses from the accused parties were unsuccessful, as no replies were received to calls or messages. Meanwhile, the affected families continue to face uncertainty as investigations proceed.
