All the seven dams that supply water to Mumbai have enough water available for 48 days. However, even though the month of June is half over, the rains have not yet started. Therefore, after waiting for another 15 days, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration is thinking of taking a decision on water reduction by the end of June. Therefore, if there is no rain in 15 days, Mumbaikars will have to face water shortage in the month of July as well.

The water supply in all the seven dams namely Vaitrana, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitrana, Bhatsa, Vihar, Tulsi, which supply water to Mumbai, is depleting. The state government has given permission to use the reserves of Bhatsa and Vaitrana dams. Therefore, 15.69 percent water storage is available in all the seven dams together with the reserve. Although this water supply is sufficient till the month of July, the municipal administration has turned its attention to the rains.

So 2 lakh 61 thousand 731 million liters of water is available. This stock is 15.69 percent. The rain has not started yet. Even if the rains start in the next fifteen days, it may take a few days for the water level in the dams to actually rise. Therefore, by the end of June, a decision on water reduction will be taken after reviewing all aspects, Additional Commissioner P. Velrasu said.
