The proposal, originally raised in 2018 by a former corporator, sought lifetime free travel benefits for retired staff after superannuation. However, after years of consideration, the BEST administration has now clarified that such a concession is not feasible.
Officials stated that the undertaking is already facing a severe financial crisis and extending free travel benefits would place an additional burden on its finances.
Currently, certain categories such as corporators, persons with disabilities, police personnel, freedom fighters, and municipal school students are provided free travel facilities. Some others, including senior citizens and students, receive concessional passes.
Earlier, retired employees were allowed free travel for one year post-retirement, but this benefit was discontinued due to mounting losses. At present, retired staff are offered an annual bus pass at a nominal cost of INR 900 instead.
The administration maintained that without external financial support or reimbursement from the government, extending additional concessions is not viable.
